The honest breakdown

Why can a small box cost so much to ship?

Shipping cider is not the same as mailing a T-shirt. The amount shown at checkout is an estimate calculated through Vinoshipper using the UPS service available for your address and the shipment details. It is separate from the cider price and can change when the final order is placed.

What can shape the estimate

  1. The trip

Distance, carrier zone, and service level all affect the UPS rate. A box going farther naturally costs more to move.

  2. The box

The number of cans changes the box size and shipment weight. Protective packaging also matters for safe arrival.

  3. The address

Residential delivery, rural or extended-area routes, and address corrections can add carrier surcharges.

  4. The legal handoff

Alcohol shipments use UPS Adult Signature Required. Someone 21 or older must be present with government-issued photo ID, and the package is not eligible for an unattended or digital release.

  5. The alcohol rules

Vinoshipper applies age verification, state and ZIP-code eligibility screening, compliance controls, UPS tracking, and coverage for loss or damage.

Why a four-pack can still be around $28

Several carrier and service factors apply at the package level rather than the can level, including the route, box size and weight, adult-signature service, and address-based surcharges. That can make a small order feel disproportionately expensive. Adding more cans can raise the total shipping price, but it may lower the shipping cost per can. The checkout estimate always has the final word.

Make the box work harder

Before placing the order, try these practical ways to get more value from the same delivery:

  • Compare the checkout totals for a four-, eight-, and twelve-pack, then divide the shipping charge by the number of cans.
  • Choose ground service when it is available and timing allows.
  • Consider a staffed business address where a 21+ adult can sign; business delivery can sometimes avoid a residential surcharge.
  • Use an eligible UPS Access Point or hold option when Vinoshipper or your tracking page offers one.
  • Watch the tracking and have a 21+ adult with ID ready so the package is not returned or reshipped.
  • Join First Pour to hear about any shipping offer we may make available.
Why not regular mail?

USPS does not allow beer, wine, or liquor in the mailstream. Beverage alcohol has to travel through an authorized private carrier under its alcohol-shipping rules.

This overview explains common shipping factors; it is not an itemized invoice. Exact service, availability, and cost are confirmed at checkout.

How does alcohol shipping work?

Checkout is age-verified, and every package requires the signature of an adult 21+ at delivery. Ship to an address where an adult's actually around during the day — home or office both work. See the complete shipping-cost breakdown above.

Who carries it?

UPS Ground, insured the whole way. Most orders arrive in 2–5 business days once UPS picks them up.

When do orders leave the cidery?

Every order packs up right here in Canisteo. You'll get tracking as soon as yours ships, and most boxes arrive within 2–5 business days of leaving the cidery.

What if nobody's home to sign?

UPS won't leave alcohol without an adult 21+ signature, so they'll typically attempt delivery again. If the box keeps missing you, use the options on your tracking link, or ship to an address where an adult's around during the day — an office works great. Stuck? Email us and we'll help sort it out.

Can I send it as a gift?

Absolutely — just enter the recipient's address at checkout and it'll confirm on the spot whether we can reach them. One heads-up: an adult 21+ has to sign for the box when it arrives, so make sure someone's around to claim it.

What if a can arrives damaged?

About the cider

Which one should I start with?

Take the flavor quiz — four questions about what you already drink, and it points you at the cider in the lineup that fits, plus two more worth a try. Rather skip ahead? Original is the un-fruited one, and the clearest look at what our base cider tastes like.

Is it gluten-free? How sweet is it?

All of it is gluten-free — made with 100% New York apples and fermented in Canisteo. No added sugar. No added water. No artificial flavors. Never have, never will. Any sweetness you taste comes from the fruit, and every cider's product page shows where it lands from dry to sweet.

How strong is it?

It varies cider to cider. The exact ABV is printed on every can and listed on every product page — check the one you're eyeing.

How should I serve and store it?

Cold — straight from the can or poured into a glass. Keep unopened cans somewhere cool and dark; the fridge is ideal.

What's the Conspiracy Series?

Our small-batch dark side: limited releases that get declassified one at a time. The standards never bend — the flavors occasionally get weird. Request clearance.

What's First Pour?

Our insider list. First Pour hears about new ciders, restocks, and classified drops before anyone else — one short email when something worth knowing happens. Claim your pour.

Who's the dog?

That's Archie. He runs quality control from the floor of the cider house and has never once approved a bad batch. Meet the rest of the crew.

Can I visit?

These days we’re heads-down making cider, not pouring it — the cidery isn’t open for visits. The good news: everything we make ships from Canisteo — enter your address at checkout to confirm we can reach you. Shop the lineup.
